University Confers Academic Appointments on Key Viapath Leaders

London, UK, 8 July 2015: King’s College London has announced academic appointments for two members of the Viapath leadership team. Dr Jonathan Edgeworth, Viapath Medical Director, has been made Professor of Clinical Infectious Diseases and Dr Dominic Harrington, Viapath Scientific Director has been made Reader in Clinical Haematology. In both cases the awards are in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.

Professor Jonathan Edgeworth

In recent years, Dr Edgeworth's research group has been evaluating rapid molecular diagnostics to reduce healthcare associated infections and ensure appropriate antibiotic use. This research has been conducted in the Centre for Clinical Infection & Diagnostics Research (CIDR), which is adjacent to the Viapath Infection diagnostic laboratories at St Thomas' Hospital. This award therefore exemplifies one of Viapath's important objectives, which is to integrate academic and laboratory diagnostic service excellence.

Dr. Dominic Harrington

Dr Harrington’s primary research interests have been to develop and apply novel laboratory markers for the assessment of vitamin status. To support this, in 2002 he coined the word ‘Nutristasis’ and set up the Human Nutristasis Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital. The unit has grown from a single staff member to a dedicated group of 12 with an annual activity of approaching 300,000 tests. Dr Harrington’s view is that laboratory tests routinely used to determine vitamin status are frequently too insensitive to detect patients who would benefit from nutritional support.

Commenting on the appointments, Richard Jones, Viapath Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted that King’s College London has recognised the outstanding academic achievements by Jonathan and Dominic. We are very lucky to have leaders in Viapath who are also playing a role in extending knowledge in the broader field of medical science for the benefit of patients and who combine exceptional clinical and academic skills with being extremely effective senior managers. These appointments bring credit to the whole organisation and are an inspiration to the emerging generation of scientists in Viapath.”
